Cohort 23: Cirkula

Cirkula

Cirkula provides a digital platform that allows restaurants and stores to reduce their food waste – a marketplace for surplus food.

The Problem

Food waste stands as one of the most pressing environmental challenges. Globally, 1/3 of all food produced is wasted, contributing to about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In Latin America alone, 127 million tons of food are wasted each year, with nearly half of this waste occurring in the consumer and distribution sector. For restaurants and stores, this translates to substantial losses, with up to 20% of their products going to waste.

The Solution

Cirkula is a digital platform that allows restaurants and stores to reduce their food waste. Instead of throwing their surplus quality food they can now sell it through Cirkula. This way, consumers eat delicious food at an accessible price, businesses recover their costs up to 45% of their product value and we all help reduce food waste.

Cirkula’s Impact

“Michelle, Co-founder of Cirkula ‘”We’ve already rescued over 250,000 products from going to waste, equivalent to more than 35,000 kilograms of food. Our goal for the next 3 years is to help over 6,000 food businesses become more sustainable in emerging LATAM.”

Michelle Gomberoff, Co-founder of Cirkula

Why we invested

When analysing the problems in the food value chain, waste happening after preparation is very emblematic, as it represents completely fine food being left over as surplus, and Cirkula addresses this opportunity with an interesting take, accounting for the singularities of Latim culture and markets. The additionality that Cirkula can have in reducing the negative externalities of food waste is significant, and we are very excited to support their growth.
